This has been a morning full of Nightwish and server outages.

I picture tiny Valkyries riding through ethernet cables and slaying recalcitrant packets.

Early 30s here, so while I'm not "out to pasture" yet, I'm on my way. I was pleasantly surprised that the pit at the Tyr/Alestorm/Suidakra show was actually full of people moshing and not trying to kick each other in the face. Best pit I've been in in nearly ten years.

As for the music... while I used to hate the stuff, Cookie Monster vocals have grown on me in the last five years, so now I don't mind them. Hell, Amon Amarth and Finntroll are two of my favorite Viking metal bands, and they both heavily use CM vocals.

That said, you might really like Tyr. No CM vocals and a deep rooting in Scandinavian folk and myth. In similar fashion, there's Rebellion and Turisas, though Turisas uses CM vocals on occasion. I actually discovered Turisas when I saw them open for DragonForce a few months back. DF's set bored me ot tears ("Okay, we get it. You're fast. Can you actually play two songs that sound remotely different? Children of Bodom has mastered this, why can't you?"). Opeth is another one that is pretty boring live, but great recorded. Yes, Michael Ackerfeldt likes using CM vocals, but when he actually sings, it's quite good and provides a nice contrast.

If you like Opeth aside from the vocals, you may want to check out Anathema. Similar musical stylings, but more melodic vocals.
