So, I'm still debating getting a vanity license plate for Zim, but it's an extra $25 annually [what can I say, I was spoiled by the $10 fee in VA when I had disposable income].

Dude, $25?!? And they have all those options still available. Yr still spoiled! I just paid $90 up-front & will pay $65 annually for my plates, & my first 8 zillion choices were taken. Altho' a portion of my fees go to Yosemite Natl. Park, that's my consolation prize.

I dunno how much it is up-front (the DMV website is tantalizingly vague about that "$25 annually, plus a $3.50 processing fee" and some random $8 thing [IIRC]), but it was like ten bucks in VA.

And a hell of a lot quicker than eight weeks, too.
