So, as I averred to in my column on ShrinkGeek this morning, I made a deal with myself yesterday while doing some questing in World of Warcraft — every time I hopped a flapping conveyance between flight points, I’d do at least a dozen chin-ups or thirty pushups. In a couple hours’ worth of shenanigans, that really adds up — in small, manageable, and completely modest chunks, to quite a few reps.

Off the top of my head, in about three or four hours' worth of gaming, I'd say I probably got about 150 chinups (the door-mounted bar in my office is a bit narrow to do pull-ups, but I tried to squeeze in some, along with isometrics & static holds & 45-60 second negatives) and 200 pushups (with my feet braced on top of my 65cm pilates ball, which is also my office chair).

Back in my EQ days I would do push-ups, sit-ups, and dumbbell curls while medding. At around level 28-31 to med from zero mana to full would take over 8 minutes.

... and people wonder why EQ doesn't cannibalize folks from games where you're actually doing stuff.

When a friend from my old EQ guild mentioned WoW to me for the first time, the first thing he said was "Dude, it's NOT EQ."

EQ was nothing but grind...wait...grind...wait...

That's actually a pretty good strategy!

I was surprised how frequently I used the flight points on the toon that is too broke to have a flying mount. *laugh*

It'd be an obstacle course for you at my place - low ceilings + ceiling fan = festive horizontal bruises. ;-)

For something a bit more low-impact, I've been improving my arms a bit by holding a bokken during those times when I'm sitting in front of a computer or TV but don't need to be actively typing. Being careful not to lock any joints, holding at the very end of the hilt for maximum muscle torsion and adjusting which muscles I'm using when it starts to get a bit tiring - then swapping arm/grip and starting again. I figure when it starts get too easy I'll move on to using something heavier like a staff or even a mop.

I haven't been doing it that long, but it's definitely helping. I tend to put on muscle in bulk first and foremost, so it's nice to have exercise that gives a bit more tone and control to my musculature, while still not being too exhausting on my low energy days.

Hey wait, is this Rafe that I met on GothCruise in 2007?
Holy Shit, I found ShrinkGeek on the net by accident and my husband started reading it...we had no idea it was written by anyone we'd met!

How funny. Good blog!
