I think I just may have made everyone who loves diet soft drinks, and who reads ShrinkGeek, hate me a little bit.

Can't wait to read it. I need to get off of the Diet Crack, anyway.

Eww sodium in a can. I used to drink them a lot until I learned they may as well be bloat juice. Been doing a cutting cycle so I don't need that....

Actually, 2-3 cups of coffee a day have some real benefits for reasonably healthy people. So, our coffee is safe.

Well, there are reasons you want to avoid caffeine. I could REALLY make [livejournal.com profile] critus hate me if I actually started evangelizing for decaf.

I have actually written a couple of things about the potential health benefits of coffee, in moderation. do a search on "coffee" and you should find 'em.

*eyebrow raises straight up to her hairline* I don't hate you, but I'm going to re-think my 3-Diet-Coke a day habit.

I'm definitely going to have to severely cut down my soft drink intake before I move to the States. I'm not sure I could quite cope with shifting to HFCS, especially given how many other foods it's already in.

The underlying message here is DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH OF EITHER.

Yes. A bit less phosphoric acid in my diet would probably help, too.

Good thing that my preferred carbonated beverage is "sparkling water" (doesn't need to be mineral or special, carbonated tap water is Just Fine, I just prefer the mouth-feel as compared to still water). Doesn't hurt taht a 2l bottle is 12 p (low enough that the thought of carting CO2 canisters around is, well, more of a hassle).

Will read in a bit.
Someone once told me to be careful because the first three letters are D I E in Diet Coke.

I'm too lazy to dig out the hazily-recalled study, but I seem to remember something about rats given aspartame and sugar water, respectively, then switching the aspartame group onto sugar as well later on. They found that the regular rats drank far less and that the aspartame rats continued the rate of increased consumption after the switch. So I'd be inclined to speculate that rather than the whole insulin-bomb thing it's the opposite; your body comes to dissociate sweetness and calories. Personally I lean toward this idea because I've never found any relationship between weight loss and cutting out/back on diet things *but* I am a giant exception in basically consuming no other sugar due to the hypoglycemia, thus making it impossible for me overeat regular sweets.

That's an interesting angle I hadn't considered, but I hadn't heard of that study prior to this. *ponders* Makes a certain amount of sense, adaptively speaking.

Nah. I like diet soda, but I drink water most of the time. I think keeping it in the category of treat, not mainstay, is good enough.

I'm pretty sure someone will eventually publish a study that proves it's bad for you, and it doesn't take a medical degree to figure out that drinking liquid chemicals probably isn't an awesome plan, but I figure that on the relative harm scale, it's probably not the worst thing ever.

Well, in all probability, you're right on all counts. However, if someone is trying to ditch some poundage and knocking these things back en masse, it might help things along to, you know, not do so.
