Why do folks like 'em, have 'em, or want 'em?

I'm curious, but it's a directed curiosity.

I have mine cause it makes it easier to dj when I travel. Also I can work on my stuff in photoshop wherever I can bring my laptop.

a) because I dislike sitting at desks -- I can use the laptop in my lap on the sofa;

b) my hands are small, and a small laptop keyboard is more comfortable

I got one because I was moving overseas but I still have it at as my main home computer. I like it because -- to state the obvious -- you can use it anywhere. That's the primary virtue. Not necessarily in terms of taking it out of the house, but just in not being anchored to a desk. And if you have a small workspace, as I do, then the fact it's small and portable is a godsend. I can easily put it away and use my desk for something else.

I'm tempted to go back to a desktop when I upgrade, but I just don't have the space for a desktop right now. If I did have the space, I'd get one and just get a netbook, because I rarely need full computer power when I'm out.

My laptop allows me to write my book in the garden, and compose letters of complaint while sitting on the toilet.

WIN.

In fairness, I have (at last count) five home laptops, two work ones, one home tower and three work ones. For me, laptops make the difference between having a study for my computers, and having to devote a wing to them.

Portability and needed for my work. Granted the company provides them now but when I first started that wasn't the case, that and IT is way behind the curve on current tech.

I had to have something to do while I;m on the road other than stare at crap cable.

i definitely dont have room for a desk, so the laptop lets me still work without one. also for my work, i travel, and the portability of it is necessary.

I got my laptop so I'd have a computer of reasonable grunt for when I was travelling. I've since found that it's quite nice to be able to leave the office and compute from somewhere else occasionally, too. I could certainly do that with a handheld/smaller form-factor device - in fact, reading on the bus would be more convenient with a PDA in most cases - but it's not enough of an inconvenience to bother with buying a separate device.

I have a laptop for work, but now that I have one period I want a desktop at home. I used to have an old decom laptop I took on trips, but I have a Blackberry that does what I need now. My users get laptops because they travel a lot, not to mention work from home. I got them docking kits so that they wouldn't have to turn in to Quasimodo to use them, though.

The majority of the reasoning is portability. I like being able to take it inbetween my place, work, my girlfriend's, any friend's place for a LAN party, to the library/diner/etc.

The laptop that I have is powerful enough to game with, so I can do that wherever. I also know people who get the small netbooks so that when they are in a hotel on buisness, they can get a quick connection to the internet. Those seem to tiny to me to realistically use.

Small people = impossible to sit at a desk without them literally hanging off me begging for attention. My lap top lets me grab a few minutes of privacy here and there to check email and lj in peace...

Portability. Typing (for writing, correspondence or futzing around on the intarwebz) plus video (mostly for Netflix but sometimes DVDs). I got convinced of the goodness of the laptop a few years ago when I had to have one for work. One way to see if you'd like it might be to borrow or lease one for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

While my iPhone covers some of the bases described above, I hate the idea of email on my phone and I could never write more than 160 characters at a time on it anyway.

I still haven't moved away from the big Death Star desktop behemoth + satellite laptop model, though.

All this reminds me I need to rethink my computing situation again...

I like not being tied to a desk - and we don't have a decent centralized place for a desktop in our current abode, and it is nice to be able to check email, write, futz around while sitting in the living room with the kid (or while lying in bed sick, or while sitting on the back porch, or while killing time at a coffee shop, etc).

Sometimes for werk, to have the ability to simultaneously test the site in multiple browsers, sometimes because I'm a lazy bastard and like the ability to keep up with work/social while still watching television.

I dont have one yet, but I want one for schooling. With the traveling/not being at home I've been doing lately I've noticed what a pain in the ass it has been to try to do school. I like my personal settings for my school interface, which seems to get wiped on other people's machines.

Other than that, for comfort and convenience. Sitting in a not so comfy computer chair is well...not comfy. Bed or sofa would be more comfy for long blocks of time.

I don't like them. Not at all. They are, by and large, not upgradable. A good one costs you near as much as a home system that is upgradable.

I simply don't have the expendable income to "upgrade" to a completely new system every few years.

And most lap tops have a fuck-all hard time running the things I want to use. Mr. WoW? I think you know what I mean. :-)
