I was brought up in a very wide-ranging musical household, with emphasis on jazz & classical. My parents tried real hard to get me some culture. I bet they wish they had all that money back now! But vocal gymnastics were always lost on me. maybe I encountered jazz-scat when I was in that ugly teenage "I hate everything my parents show me" stage and never got over it. I just can't kill the giggles. And of course I was instantly reminded of Strong Bad:
I was a scrawny kid with a big mouth, and got splitting headaches trying to play the trumpet - what else was I gonna do?
Jazz is one of those things that will actively drive me out of a room, cursing, because it's one of those things that I not only fail to appreciate, but fail to see the attraction of. I don't give a damn if people think Miles Davis was the archangel Gabriel incarnate, I can't listen to any of his work without wondering "What the fuck is this shit?"
I feel similarly. I RESPECT jazz, but I very rarely enjoy it. There is one I can listen to endlessly - Favorite Things by John Coltrane. If you have not heard it, I recommend you seek it out. And Miles Davis was an odd duck anyway.

Yeah, I was a chorus geek in high school. What are you gonna do about it?

Jazz sounds like someone stumbling over music instead of making it, to my ear.
