Recounted this else-LJ in another context, but it's an entertaining trip down the memory hole.

When I was a kid, we'd take family vacations to Maine, and one year, my dad and I went deep-sea fishing. Everyone else on the boat was catching stuff - dogfish, mackerel, and one guy cought a forty-pound Codfish that was nearly as big as I was - but I was pulling up an empty hook every cast, until late in the day.

The rod bent, the reel got hard to turn, and I cranked, and cranked, and cranked, for what seemed like twenty minutes (long enough to draw quite a crowd, in any case).

Finally, the leader broke the surface, followed by the lure and hook.

... which had somehow impaled a barnacle.

I had fought an epic struggle, and caught a rock.

I will be annoyed until the day I die that I left the damn thing on the boat.
