Not quite to that degree, but I think the author is suggesting that the drill hole could be compromised and end up being much larger than it currently is.

It's very much like the magma chamber feeding a volcano, just less explody.

I do not think building a wall from Miami to Havana to Cozumel is very practical, but that's what it would take to prevent, well... yeah.

Well, since the last ice age, anyway, but if it ends up thoroughly fucking up, say, the western North Atlantic, it's inching towards being an order of magnitude short of the K/T boundary.

I keep waffling between "well, FUCK" and "how seriously should I consider restocking the apocalypse preparedness kit?"
