High dynamic range (HDR) shot of Manhattan at night. I happened upon these shots a couple months ago when I was trying to score a copy of Metatropolis in a series of simultaneous contests by the contributing authors. This one is dark enough not to blind me when I turn my computer on without using a desk lamp first.

true, but I remain skeptical that hundreds of thousands of gallons have just vanished due to natural breakdown in the time since the well was capped.

It hasn't vanished, it's just not on the surface anymore. We don't really have any reliable technology for widespread detection of subsurface oil.
