30 - your favorite song at this time last year
I touched on this inadvertently last week; I'm much more a spatial or event-memory sort for music than I am a specific-person one. Thus, pretty much any song that hasn't been played to death on the radio has environmental recollections; some just have a wider or more generic array of these than others.
Some of the more singular-association ones:
- "Blister in the Sun" - Kim's brother's best friend's wedding; this was the wedding party's group dance track, where everyone got on the dance floor and pogo'd; it's the only positive connotation I have for the tune. I basically hate this song (and band) otherwise.
- Tchaikovski's 1812 Overture - Stopped in rush hour traffic, counter-clockwise southbound on the 495 Beltway just outside of Washington DC, helping my best friend at the time move all his stuff to Raleigh-Durham for grad school. This was in the days when I had 400-some watts of subwoofer stuffed into my beige POS '89 Cavalier, and the confused looks the other motorists were giving me when they realized it wasn't rap, metal, or hip-hop shaking their windows were worth entertaining.
- Soundgarden, "Outshined" - The living room of the dormitory suite I lived in during my junior year of college. I had a cheap, undersized electric bass that I was trying to play, and this was the only song I was ever able to play and sing all of, after much practice in that room.
