Sil was one of the co-hosts. She left (the committee, her husband, the country, me holding the bag).

as a result of that, she fucked him over financially, so i ended up footing almost the entire bill ($20,000) for the event's budget shortfall (budget had been projected for 300 guests, 225 were able to make it; this was 2008 just as the economy was face-planting)

Oh, ouch! I had a friend go through something similar with a BookCrossing convention a year ago. It wasn't any maliciousness, though... just people planned to attend then couldn't and the budget still had to be met. We held an auction to defray some of the costs, but I know she still wound up eating some of them. Not quite to the same tune as yours, though.
