There are a lot of goatees in my office these days; I myself was too lazy to shave my entire face in advance of yesterday's "dress nice" meeting[1], which is my usual MO when I'm sporting one, or X days' worth of overall stubble/scruff.
[1] It was a team appreciation lunch. Topics of conversation skewed heavily towards amusement parks & rides, unexpectedly deep-fried foodstuffs, and pro/con discussions of being in Times Square for NYE & New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

What is the most unexpectedly deep-fried foodstuff you remember from the discussion?

I'd sit well back from the road, on an inflatable beer couch, and taunt the float-riders into hurling good beads at me, bitch about the fact that we were at the family-friendly end of the parade route and therefore absolutely not going to get flashed by anyone, and basically wait to get the fuck out. Bourbon Street (and the surrounding blocks) are shoulder-to-shoulder people, and ankle-deep in dropped beads, spilled beer, and bodily fluids resulting from drinking said beer. MG's success is rated in thousands of tons of trash requiring removal for a reason.
I'm a big fan of pickles, and recently a friend mentioned those w/ tabasco in the batter, which sounded fabulous. Colleagues mentioned oreos, ice cream, mac & cheese, and butter.

Deep-fried pickles with tabasco do sound good.
Deep frying is a really good way to make lots and lots of bacon (no breading/batter, and it ends up no greasier than any other way of cooking bacon).
I also like deep-fried basil leaves. Drop individual leaves (no batter/breading) into the fryer.
Deep-fried soft-boiled eggs are one of my favorite unusual deep-fried foods.
