14 Propaganda Techniques Fox 'News' Uses to Brainwash Americans — Remember, fair and balanced. (Via [info]shsilver.)

The Dirty Digger — Roger Ebert on Rupert Murdoch. What I can't figure out is why the Murdoch scandal is a scandal. There's nothing new or surprising about News Corp's conduct. It's like being shocked to find out that FOX has an editorial slant, or that water is wet. Juan Cole with more on this, including an interesting thesis.

Angry Tea Party Stirring up GOP Revolt — Doesn't "angry" pretty much describe the Tea Party? Enraged, low-information, counterfactually obsessed conservatives.

Marriage Equality = Republican Albatross — And it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of venal, opportunistic hypocrites.

Real Dems Beat Fake 'Dems' In Wisconsin Recall Primaries — Ah, the GOP. If you can't win on ideas or by sowing panic, just cheat. Look! Over there! Voter fraud! ACORN!

No, it's not new. The scandal / criminal proceedings started in 2006 against 2 NotW employees, who were jailed on 2007.

It's expanded since then, and hit a critical mass in British public opinion this summer, likely in part because the paper didn't stop breaking the law, and escalated their offensiveness (clearing Milly Dowlers voicemail, and going after Army widows).

NI's attempt to fully acquire Sky, which would massively extend their share of UK media, was making politicians antsy. NI's endorsement of the Tories, then Labour then the Tories again is seen as having had a significant influence in the national elections - either they're really good at sensing changes in the political winds or they turn very adroitly). The takeover would have given them even greater clout.

So, while up to now, it's common knowlege that they're sleazy, but they've been caught out big time with lots of prosecutable evidence AND politicians see an opportunity to get Murdoch off their backs.

Agreed.

Also scandal = What The British Media Does instead of informing us about, you know, actual Stuff going on in the world. Not to mention the rest of the media outlets making a big song and dance out of portraying themselves as less sleazy as NI. This is largely a lie.
