My original plan, such as it was, was to doctor up the turkey chili recipe in this month's Muscle & Fitness to have something vaguely in keeping with the holiday. That was torpedoed by getting stuck working late last night and seeing what a madhouse the supermarket was. All right, improvisation with what's on hand it is.

Into the slow cooker went:
- short rack of beef ribs
- 2# browned ground beef
- 3 onions
- 1T of my buddy Rob's "chipotle dry rub" blend; I'll have to ask him what's in it
- scant tablespoon each of chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, and black pepper
- 12oz barbecue sauce (because I don't have any canned tomatoes of whatever sort that goes into chili)
- 2 12oz cans of cut green beans, with liquid (no red beans, kidney beans, or any other kind of beans on hand)

6 hours on medium, 6 hours on "keep warm," and 1 hour on high to re-heat.

It's not bad, but is certainly not guest-worthy grub. As fuel on a nice day when a serious squat workout is planned, it suits.

Magellan was all up in my grill to get at it when I brought him in to meow at my parents when they called. However, it totally looks like nothing so much a bowl full of dog barf.

"What are you going to do, eat it? Or look at it". And with that comment, I think I've spent entirely too much time with my old man. I'll post you some pretty-but-shitty food while you fill up on decent fuel. Best of both worlds. Unfortunately, scratch-n-sniff tech just hasn't advanced fast enough (I can only imagine the trollerific possibilities if it had). Happy day...

This.

I'm no presentation snob, but this stuff is about as unappetizing-looking as I'm willing to go before the food ceases to make it to my mouth.

It really did induce a surprising amount of defiance in your little fuzzy shadow. It made me wish I'd found a convenient way to grab video from Skype as easily as I can grab screenshots. I'm pretty sure a mandatory 30 seconds of "Magellan and the quest for a bowl of hideous tasty-smelling toxic onion death" before all diplomatic negotiations could go a long way toward world peace.

I think the green beans are probably what killed it, presentation-wise.

Not really, it's lumpy, brown, and shiny... they're just greenish bits in the rest of that, which... doesn't help.

Lumpy, brown, and shiny describes most of the menu at Indian or Ethiopian restaurants. If that helps.

True. I am re-heating it while I lift, so I may take a picture just to share, because... internet reasons?

Heh. I can totally picture that dish being unappetizing to look at but taste-wise...sounds like it ought to work out great! There was a pumpkin soup with shrimp dish that I waited a long time to post just because it looked like pureed baby food -- after it had been regurgitated. But it tasted great! So the next time I made it, I worked on the presentation to get it to at least look presentable for a photo :)
