Okay, this has been bugging me ([livejournal.com profile] mpeace got this full-force via YM the other day) for a while. . .

You know how big a goddamned "cup" of coffee, according to coffee pot manufacturers? SIX OUNCES.

So, a pseudo-poll:

How big is everyone's handiest coffee/tea slurping container:

- 6oz
- 8-10oz
- 10-12oz
- 12-16oz
- 16-24oz
- 24-32oz
- 32oz (or IV drip, you addict)

I discovered the arbitrary "6oz = 1 cup" thing today by observation - K gets a single 16 oz cup, slightly underfilled, and I get two (likewise) out of 8.5 "cups" according to our trusty Braun.

8 fluid ounces is a standard measure cup, though I can't speak for your coffeemaker. my mug is prolly in the 8-10 range, though I usually just use it as a stabilizing base for my 16-18 oz plastic cup of water.

Probably ~10-12 oz.

A "12-cup" pot usually yields six mugs of coffee. I add milk to fill it up.

Sometimes the pot only yields 5.5 mugs... maybe they're larger.

I figure the cups to which the manufacturers refer would be the size of those cups that you get as part of a set of dishware. Our usual mugs are at least twice that size. This explains why I've had coffee in my veins instead of blood in the past (and will again, in the future).

Heh, I have one of those big cups with Matisse painting on it, and it's got to be like 10 oz. Yeah, and what's up with that 6 oz cup thing? Where I was raised, 8 oz = 1 cup!!!

My favorite mug is in the 10oz range someplace, but the cups I get from the gas station (in Wisconsin or Minnesota, PDQ is the Gas Station Of Choice for thier actually excellent coffee) are 22oz. So, for me, a "serving" is about 20oz.

There's a coffee place in Madison that does do 32oz styro cups, though....

32oz. Styrafoam. Cup.

Of the holy drink for the hours of the daystar?

Then again... That would be pure hell to attempt to consume while driving. Especially in a stick-shift. Oy.

They'll serve them at the drive-through too. The cups come with a fairly tight-fitting styro lid as well, so heat retention is good, but it doesn't have a hole for a straw...

I'm just thinking... where do you put that? I mean, it's just going to go flying! And then, a tight-fitting lid don't mean squat.

Then again, I drive a stick shift and drink from large ceramic mugs while driving on winding SoCal suburban roads over steep hills, so perhaps I shouldn't speak.

The cup fits in the average "big gulp" cupholder, since it's not any bigger than the giant 44oz soda cups. I know they make window-mounted cupholders for those.

my default cup is one I found years ago, a 32 oz Winnie the Pooh mug.. if I'm not using it (soaking off stains or whatever) I use a 24 oz cup.
Yes. I'm an addict.
I consider a 32 oz cup completely normal.

At present, I'm drinking out of a 10-12 oz. mug. However, I do a little victory dance that WaWa (a local convenience store chain with coffee so good I think they worked out a deal with Satan to create it) now has 24-oz. coffee cups. I can have one of those a day! Yaay!

Providing it quenches my thirst and tastes good, I dont really mind.

my mugs range from small (8 oz.) to uber (i have no friggen clue- prolly around 24oz.) my daily barstucks stop for chai is the "grande" (whatever that is equivalent to), and my dew meassurement of choice is the 20 oz. heh.
