Remember when I was bitching about how expensive gas was 14 months ago, because it had gone up 30% in the preceeding eight months?

On the heels of a conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] ross_winn last night, this news tidbit arrives.

I filled up yesterday right at the national average. Can't say I'm too pleased about that, but at least that's a -dollar- less than some of the poor bastards in southern California are getting raped for.

I really loathe that the gas prices have gone up and minimum wage hasn't. It's freakin' ridiculous. Until everyone's salary goes up...umm..wish they wouldn't cause a lovely bout of oh...inflation.

it must really suck to own a car right now..

Well.. you guys hang in there, and I will continue to think of the poor souls while filling up my 2 1/2 gallon tank that lasts me a month.

*evil grin*

Oh, I fill up once a month. Less than a dollar a day, even with the ridiculous prices.

I hope this ends, but not before making all those SUV-driving asshats downsize to sedans and minivans.

Peak Oil, baby.

The apocalypse started a few months ago.

You've read up on this, eh? I'm wondering if it's chicken little bullshit, or not.

Apparently, production is actually -up-, it's the speculation that's been driving the price through the fucking roof.

Have I mentioned how much I hate stock market professionals?

...before the collapse of civilization. Might as well have that $10k Rolex while it is still worth something rather than after the fall when it won't get you a sick cow in trade.

I have read some alarmist, doomsday versions of peak oil. I'm sure it isn't that bad, but I'm also sure it isn't especially rosy either. I just hope my son has a real world in which to grow up.

OPEC must be aware of this - it's probably the single hottest topic at their meetings. You figure they know better than anybody else when the wells will run dry and they have to factor that in to their policies. They COULD ramp up production, but that brings THE END closer. What do you suppose will happen to the Saudi royal family when the oil (money) stops? Saudi Arabia will go back to being a sandy shit-hole with no redeeming qualities except a few hundred million Muslims who think the West screwed them.

Seriously, any country which depends on oil as the primary export is looking at civil war/popular uprising. Kuwait will explode, Saudi Arabia will become a backwater religious state, etc.

I bet they are afraid to increase production.

I was just pondering gas prices this morning myself. Specifically, how as a relatively recent CA emigrant, I pretty much don't even notice gas prices now unless/until they exceed $2/gal for regular unleaded, and that hasn't happened since I've been back in TX, so I pretty much have no idea what "normal" is for around here other than a vague impression that it's between $1.60 and $1.90.

I was recently annoyed at some morning radio DJs ranting about rising oil prices and how if crude goes up to (some amount approx 60% greater than it is now) we could be looking at $100 for a tank of gas (shock, horror!). First I was severely questioning their math, as I, driving a car with a typical 13 gallon tank (10ish to fill regularly), currently pay $20/tank, and with that percentage increase would only pay something like $35/tank. By extension, therefore, they're probably looking at an extreme case like people who drive H2s or other similar needlessly oversized and overpowered and inefficient behemoths around town, and I have zero sympathy for them.

. . .*at current rates of consumption* and we won't have to worry about it anymore!

I keep trying to talk you into a smaller conveyance, but do you wanna go from your SUV to a sedan?
Date/Time: 2005-03-20 16:41 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] geeki.livejournal.com
Cant.

2 kids (read two car seats), and fiance.

That's 4, which means if we HAVE a 5 person vehicle, we literally can not take anyone else with us ever. Have you tried to sit between two car seats in the back seat? It isnt cool.

And I am sorry but I just cant deal with a mini-van. Of course my hope is that the hybrid truck/SUV is coming out this year...

Everyone asks me why I don't have my license yet. Why? Besides being able to pay for a car and insurance, who can afford gas?

*remembers the good 'ol days when gas was .84 as a high price...*

Hmm...I just got transferred to a site that's further away than from where I am now (and thankfully *way* less busy), so I'll pipe down about the gas costs, even with my leadfoot.
