Remember when I was bitching about how expensive gas was 14 months ago, because it had gone up 30% in the preceeding eight months?

On the heels of a conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] ross_winn last night, this news tidbit arrives.

I filled up yesterday right at the national average. Can't say I'm too pleased about that, but at least that's a -dollar- less than some of the poor bastards in southern California are getting raped for.

Peak Oil, baby.

The apocalypse started a few months ago.

You've read up on this, eh? I'm wondering if it's chicken little bullshit, or not.

Apparently, production is actually -up-, it's the speculation that's been driving the price through the fucking roof.

Have I mentioned how much I hate stock market professionals?

...before the collapse of civilization. Might as well have that $10k Rolex while it is still worth something rather than after the fall when it won't get you a sick cow in trade.

I have read some alarmist, doomsday versions of peak oil. I'm sure it isn't that bad, but I'm also sure it isn't especially rosy either. I just hope my son has a real world in which to grow up.

OPEC must be aware of this - it's probably the single hottest topic at their meetings. You figure they know better than anybody else when the wells will run dry and they have to factor that in to their policies. They COULD ramp up production, but that brings THE END closer. What do you suppose will happen to the Saudi royal family when the oil (money) stops? Saudi Arabia will go back to being a sandy shit-hole with no redeeming qualities except a few hundred million Muslims who think the West screwed them.

Seriously, any country which depends on oil as the primary export is looking at civil war/popular uprising. Kuwait will explode, Saudi Arabia will become a backwater religious state, etc.

I bet they are afraid to increase production.
