I can't say that I completely agree with all the sentiments expressed re: Imminent Hostilities, but for an entertainingly wry take on them, I defer to Steven Brust, from his novel Dragon:

"Well, Vlad," he said. "Are you prepared to strike another blow for freedom?"
"Is that what we're doing?"
"No, but it sounds better than helping a wealthy and powerful aristocrat maintain his wealth and power."
"Have you been listening to my conversations?"

Okay, you can quote Brust. Are you reading him now, or is this one of those gems you stored just in case? Either way, well done!

re-reading, actually. i decided to blow a little over my impending tax return on books and hardware. i'm still missing one book in the jhereg series, but i'm not entirely certain which one, so i'm re-reading all of them "chronologically" (per the storyline, not publication dates) to try and figure out where the gap is.

gibson's new one, "pattern recognition" is in queue for the plane to vegas for the wedding.

edit: that first line should read "blow a little over half" - $400 out of $620 (between state and federal)

and, in a finaly display of coincidence and/or synchronicity, my parents just mailed me two of his books (one of which i already have), and one which contains the missing segment (it turns out to have been Athrya).

i like those better, but it's just an emoticon for flashing the metal sign (horns) with your hand. shorthand for "brust rocks". i figured with your command of 13375p34|< you'd know it, but it may be more of an IRC thing.

</geek>

yes, it's silly. :) mr. brust is still a fine writer.
