I was all set to relieve some intra-cranial pressure caused by Sting and The Boys' inane warblings[1] when King Kaufman shared a link to a UN Wonk's Fellatio of Cricket... It's heartening to know that, even if the [livejournal.com profile] wildturkeyparty were to inadvertently come to power, I could continue to spout my occasional half-baked stupidities.

Everything I, personally, know about the game is what I managed to glean from repeated readings of Adams' HhGttG, which is to say, roughly fuck-all. If it's a longer, more boring version of baseball, then I will continue to wallow in my ignorance and simply prepare to lay more kindling at the feet of SportsCenter directors who choose to further erode the time given to NHL highlights with the onset of lawnmowerbaseball season.

Forthwith, An Incomplete List of Things Other People Like A Great Deal (But Which I Do Not), An Occasional Series (or, "Shooting White Elephants").

[1] Specifically, "I can't stand losing." Someone please explain, using small words (and pictures if necessary), why these yobs are considered to be great musicians? I don't fucking see it.

Cricket (like every sport I know anything about) is something you can't enjoy watching unless you've played it.

So, if you want to know, play the game.

I see this as being generally, but not always, true.

I can't stand watching soccer or tennis, despite having played them (competitively or otherwise) quite a bit.

Golf, I had no use for until I played it.

Curling, on the other hand, I *love* to watch, despite having never touched the rock in my life.

Never got the Tolkien thing myself.

Re: mushrooms - the eating kind or the I see funny things kind?

Re: Reality TV, exactly whose 'reality' are they portraying?

Like [livejournal.com profile] hellsop, I'm fond of the fungi myself.

Don't care for the fruit of the deadly nightshade though, unless it's cooked in to some sauce type thing.

I only take exception with 1 thing on your list....

Have you read Dune or just seen the movie(s)?

Otherwise, I'm inclined to agree that they are all overrated.

As for The Police, I could care less that they're doing an overpriced reunion. I'm still full-up on their music from the 80s. It was *that* overplayed.

I've watched both versions of the movie, but don't think I'm capable of doing enough drugs to understand it.

Reading is a much different experience.
Still not for everyone, though.

police - my mom brainwashed me early. i enjoy their first few records.
tolkein - i guess i just don't know any better
guinness - like a blanket of beer. makes me very happy
leguin - hit or miss. really like a few of her books.
dune - movies suck, the first few books are great.
mushrooms - i need the protein.
the last four are not my thing. well, except forthis "reality" show (http://www.bravotv.com/Work_Out/index.shtml), because i think the woman is incredibly hot.

Finally getting around to responding to this (largely because I'm actually in the office today and can't goof off in other ways).

- The Police (specificially, "Can't Stand Losing You")

I think, more than anything, it was the reggae influence that The Police brought to the scene that made them stand out more than anything else. At that time, there really wasn't much comparable in the American music scene. Ska was huge over in the UK, but not here. Consequently, I think had it not been for their success here they wouldn't have amounted to much. That being said, the song in particular you mention is supposed to be annoying. It's about a whiny prat who is going to kill himself over a girl. Like many of their songs, I don't think that the popularity of the song is at all related to the actual message or content. People hear "Can't Stand Losing You" over and over again in the chorus and think it's some kind of romantic love song. Go figure.

- J.R.R. Tolkien

Tolkien is to Fantasy what Star Wars is to Science Fiction. It was groundbreaking at the time of its release, it had many elements that were duplicated time and time again in the fiction that followed, it was the way in which many young people were exposed to the genre, and when you go back and revisit it as an adult you realize that it really wasn't that good. You also realize there is a lot more to it than you picked up as a kid, but boy did he need an editor (Ross once told me that he refused to use them, and looking at the book I see no listing of one).

- Guinness

I'm with you here. Can't stand it.

- Ursula K. LeGuin

Who?

- Dune

Read the book.

- Mushrooms

Yummy. You're on crack.

- Hip-Hop

Like most genre's some of it is quite good. As a general rule I'm with you though.

- David Lynch

Heh. My friend George once equated his work to mental masturbation. Intellectual types watch his movies and have little braingasms as they see all the "subtle" imagery that Lynch puts in there. I can't say he's entirely wrong. That being said, I'm one of the folks who enjoys his work for precisely that reason.

- "Reality" TV

Nothing real about it, and it sucks.

- Basketball

Ooo...a sport in which every game basically boils down to who gets the ball down to their end of the court at the end of the time. How exciting.

Not.
