So, bright and early Saturday morning I got out of bed and ogled some cheerleaders (without the 'tubes as the delivery mechanism, even).

I also ran 5k, in the Tampa Bay Draft Day Dash. Having not run, at all, since the last 5k race, but pursuing a bit more vigorous workout regimen (basketball twice a week for an hour and a half or so, three days of weight training and occasional time on the elliptical machine), I had no idea how my performance would be.

The answer? Fractionally faster.

Without the benefit of ChampionChip timing for certainty, my splits, according to the volunteers calling them out along the course, were 7:30, 15:55 (the overall winner finished just as I hit the two mile mark; I'd also been hit with a side stitch *sigh*), and a finish time of about 24:10.

That's (yet another) great illustration of how well a general physical fitness programme (as you do) improves performance in almost every sphere -- most runners would assume that you couldn't possibly improve your running time without actually doing a running-specific training programme.

I'm pleased but not surprised - one of the items touched on in Pavel Tatsouline's book was a study where KB practitioners outperformed other athletes who had undertaken event-specific training. It's nice to see the upshot of this personally.

Yeah, it's a pretty standard Crossfit maxim as well -- that we will outperform many event-specific athletes, often even at their own sport, and certainly at almost any other sport. It was well illustrated at that Olympic lifting event I blogged about -- the other athletes were astonished that the Manchester Crossfit lot had been doing generalised fitness stuff rather than an Olympic-specific training.

I have to pick up some of Pavel's work sometime... I've heard of people who got very good results doing both his KB Challenge workouts AND Crossfit WODs each day. Wouldn't mind giving that a try sometime, though I doubt I'd keep it up week after week!

... is still improvement.... :) Sounds like you may want to focus on cardiovascular endurance a little more next time, basketball is more sprint-y and explosive, not sure how much time you're putting in on the elliptical? Unfortunately, as is probably the case with you as well, running for long periods of time bores the living daylights out of me... I've been picking up the ol' jumprope a little lately, thats not too bad, but again, thats more high intensity and short than endurance... blech.

Honestly, it's not as much a cardio endurance thing - I can do an hour of fairly intense time on the elliptical after lifting for 45 minutes (on days when time and attitude permit). This is similar to what happened when I ran cross country in HS - I'm just not getting in the mental gear to run fast for twenty minutes, I invariably can do the race, stand around for ten minutes, and then feel like I could do it again, albeit more slowly. *shrug*

Next question. Who won the pool?

There was no pool.
