This has been a morning full of Nightwish and server outages.

I picture tiny Valkyries riding through ethernet cables and slaying recalcitrant packets.

I just bought tix for Nightwish last night. Viking Metal FTW!

While I'd hesitate to call Nightwish "Viking metal"1, if you're into VM Tyr is currently on tour with Alestorm and Suidakra.

This was hands-down the best metal show I've been to in a while (though seeing Turisas a few months back was close)

1 they're more symphonic power metal or operatic metal

hadn't heard of them, but from what I've just read on their Wikipedia entry, I may have to check them out.

Oh..it's Liv Kristine from old Theatre of Tragedy and her husband who is from Atrocity. Vinland Saga is the best album IMO. :D

You might like Tarot (Marco from Nightwish's band) and For My Pain (Tuomas from Nightwish's side project.)

I'll shut it now I could go on and on about metal.:D

I'll definitely have to check those out. Thanks for the tips!

I'm perfectly content to threadjack Rafe's journal if it means chatting about metal. *puts the kettle on and flops on the couch*

Threadjack! Threadjack!

I actually sing an awesome semi-opera rendition of many of Iron Maiden's songs. Which btw reminds me of Floor Jansen/After Forever's rep for same. :D

It's rare that I find new (to me) metal I can live with. I immediately flunk any band with the Cookie Monster vocals, so that's like 70% of all metal bands right there. I'm way too particular - Dragonforce is too damn fast, Opeth has the growly vocals, etc. Dream Theater keeps my attention pretty well, so thank God they release a new disc in a couple months.

Plus I'm almost 40 - I'll be the sad old bastard in the back complaining about how loud it is while all the asshole kids make fun of 'grandpa' back there. Its hard for a metal fan to age gracefully.

Early 30s here, so while I'm not "out to pasture" yet, I'm on my way. I was pleasantly surprised that the pit at the Tyr/Alestorm/Suidakra show was actually full of people moshing and not trying to kick each other in the face. Best pit I've been in in nearly ten years.

As for the music... while I used to hate the stuff, Cookie Monster vocals have grown on me in the last five years, so now I don't mind them. Hell, Amon Amarth and Finntroll are two of my favorite Viking metal bands, and they both heavily use CM vocals.

That said, you might really like Tyr. No CM vocals and a deep rooting in Scandinavian folk and myth. In similar fashion, there's Rebellion and Turisas, though Turisas uses CM vocals on occasion. I actually discovered Turisas when I saw them open for DragonForce a few months back. DF's set bored me ot tears ("Okay, we get it. You're fast. Can you actually play two songs that sound remotely different? Children of Bodom has mastered this, why can't you?"). Opeth is another one that is pretty boring live, but great recorded. Yes, Michael Ackerfeldt likes using CM vocals, but when he actually sings, it's quite good and provides a nice contrast.

If you like Opeth aside from the vocals, you may want to check out Anathema. Similar musical stylings, but more melodic vocals.

"Cookie Monster vocals"

btw: I had custom made earplugs made recently, and they're the best thing I've done for my ears in years (they're actually a little TOO quiet, but I find there's good range to the sounds I hear)
