Church feeds the icky, nasty homeless, gets shut down by neighbors who just can't have that sort of thing in these nice, rich places.

Ha, but every time the fucking right wingers complain that the rich get taxed more, they call THAT "class warfare."

A lawyer in Houston tried to shut down a church shelter and soup kitchen. He was shocked that not only did the local press do a bit of research and find out he moved in long after they started the shelter/soup kitchen but he was aghast that his very own clients had a problem with him trying to shut down the church. Therefore he dropped his case, and even included an "I saw the light and changed my ways" story for the newspaper.

What's killing me right now are the people calling for a national sales tax. This would so disproportionately hurt the poorest people (who currently don't make enough to pay income tax and whose income would be hit much harder by increased sales tax), it's not even close to funny.

The church I attended in NYC was on Fifth Avenue, & they also had a ministry reaching out to the homeless. On Fifth Avenue. Some of the most expensive real estate in the world. They fought their neighbors & the city for years, but finally their steps were declared a sanctuary & the homeless were allowed to sleep there without being molested by the cops & we fed them breakfast every morning.

We also had a shelter in the church but there were always more homeless people than we had beds.

Good for you and that church. I'm not a big fan of organized religion, but I always love to hear when one steps up to do what is right, rather than what is easy.

People just don't want homeless people to exist, and somehow think that wishing and legislating will make it so. It's really easy for most people to turn it into an us vs them thing, and their thinking process just doesn't go any further than that.

Reminds me of the assholes that move to the country and then try to get the nearby farms shut down because of the noisy smelly animals only Much worse. Make you wish people really went to hell.....
