digitaldiscipline: (new back)
It's easy to overlook and forget how much total progress you've made when you're struggling with more immediate frustrations until someone unexpectedly mentions it. I've felt good but not great at the gym lately, and was, other than a long workout on Sunday, pretty slothful all weekend. This made some remarks from someone who I consider to be pretty athletic, regarding some of the half-assed but challenging things I was doing to unwind from work (dragon flags, specifically), kind of an eye-opener, in a good way.

It's true, isn't it? I still have a long way to go, but starting to join other people in my workouts has me looking around and seeing the milestones I've accomplished. Before, I was feeling pretty unaccomplished and focused on the improvement still to come. Reminds me a of cycling trainer who said: it never gets easier, you just get faster. I guess with weights you just do more reps?

more reps, or more weight, or both (ideally).

i see what your trainer was saying: if you put in the effort, what you can do today is way more than it was your first time.

I'm constantly getting bogged down by small plateaus . . it is extremely easy to forget the progress you've made. But, in the same breath, it's much easier to quash a plateau earlier, rather than later . . . .

Color me half empty.

...and it's still going to suck ass. You can't measure progress on effort, because it's always going to be hard; easy to lose sight of the fact that today's hard was impossible last year.
