digitaldiscipline: (new back)
(Reposting for the weekend warriors: those of you who saw this Friday... well, it's damn quiet around here, sorry)

http://www.fitocracy.com/knowledge/rage-box-training-with-rafe-brox/

I am one of the pilot participants in Fitocracy's online coaching program, so if you want to get my brains-on advice to whip your ass into shape in the tender, loving, and inexorably enabling way you'd expect from Yours Truly[1], they're offering my services at a bargain introductory rate, with the beatings to commence on February 17th.

If you or someone you know is terrified in a good way of giving this a try, feel free. I won't be crueler or kinder to friends, frienemies, or total strangers.

[1] Which is to say, if you say you want to accomplish something, I will not let you give up. I am a right fucking bastard like that.

Were it not for the fact that I am poor, buried under coursework, and also the fact that I don't have a Fitocracy account, I would take you up on this.

(Side note, if you know of any way to help with chronic pain, stiffness, and locking in one's hands and wrists, I'm all ears to it--with the exception of any NSAIDs, as I can't take those thanks to being on blood thinner)

Well, fitocracy is free, but there's a paid level to it as well, which I have only peripherally taken advantage of. I believe this is priced at $55 for two months, which, while not free, is still cheap-ish. :-)

I would recommend other anti-inflammatories, such as fish oil, and ice (or other cold/cool compresses) if you can stand it. Checking the inflammation-causing properties of what you're eating - maybe even going so far as to checking for celiac sensitivity, etc - might be warranted, depending. when my inflammation gets bad (hands/wrists/forearms - too much typing), i tend to hit it with a combination of acetomenaphin and nsaids.

My GF has had a revelation since discovering, first by hearsay, and then via 23andMe genetic testing, that folate methylation issues were an underlying cause to several symptoms similar to yours, so this might be something to mention to your medical practitioner as well.

I am seriously considering it. There are some monkey bars that I need to get across at Tough Mudder...

I struggled most with the rope climb, because I had no traction and had rolled my ankle on a previous obstacle, on the one I did.

No rope climb on the TM I did last year, but there was one at Spartan Sprint. I *almost* had it, I learned how to climb silks when I took a circus fitness class and was doing okay until I stopped to "rest". :-) The monkey bars I don't even get to the second bar. :-( This year's TM (May 31) is going to be at a bigger ski hill and friends who have done it there in previous years says that it's harder than the one I did, so I want to train more for it. And I'm signed up for Spartan Sprint again, but that's later in the year.

Hills in mud suck right out loud no matter which direction you're going on them.

I would recommend doing grip work to train for the monkey bar obstacle - whether it's barbell shrugs/rows, farmer's walks, heavy dumbbell rows, or just hanging from a pullup bar for as long as you can.

I dunno, I had a lot of fun sliding down a rock free one once. :-) But, yeah, climbing them sucks.
My grip is decent, it's a shoulder issue - I can hang, but the swinging is defeating me. My legs are blown from snowshoeing this weekend, I'll try some grip stuff tonight to benchmark.
I signed up for the group, looking forward to your ministrations. :-)

Alas, I know myself well enough to know that personal training only works if the trainer is physically present to push me. Otherwise, I'd be all over this. Well, I would be if I had the money, which alas I don't right now.
